A Spark Ignites: The Early Days of Marketing
My online marketing journey began way back in primary school when I won a prize for designing a poster for a school bazaar. That early experience sparked my interest in creating engaging campaigns. This passion led me to pursue a Public Relations Management Diploma, where I learned the fundamentals of marketing. But it would be years later that this spark turned into a mighty flame…
It was a fascinating period. I loved learning about the marketing concepts, but it felt a little like trying to navigate a dense forest without a map. The theory was overwhelming. It was like being thrown into a sea of unfamiliar jargon – "target audience," "marketing mix," "positioning." It felt like a whole new language!
A Winding Path to Purpose
However, my fascination with human behavior led me down a different path—a psychology degree, followed by a postgraduate certificate in education. I loved the career guidance aspect of teaching Life Orientation in high school. It was a truly rewarding experience to learn how to help students discover their talents, navigate the complexities of career choices, and envision their future paths.
A few years before I became a full-time online marketing consultant, I joined the HR team of an EdTech startup. It was a fascinating journey to see how technology could empower education and create a new landscape for learning. I also found myself enjoying the analytical side of things, analyzing interview data to help make informed decisions. With my Head of HR's encouragement, I pursued and completed a Google Data Analytics Certification Course.
I also loved the company's vision and witnessing its transformation into a SaaS company providing online learning solutions. It was truly inspiring to see how technology could revolutionize education, creating new possibilities for learning and personal growth.
All these experiences converged into a passion for helping people achieve their goals through career alignment and talent development. It was like a "eureka" moment. I realized that my love for psychology (especially the psychology of work), my experience in education, and my understanding of online marketing could all come together to make a real difference. I believe that work should be fulfilling, aligning with our passions and purpose, and contributing to our sense of self. It's about helping people find their "why" and build a life that reflects their true selves. It's not just about a job—it's about finding our purpose and contributing to the world.

In mid-2019, I discovered the world of online marketing. It was a life-changing moment. However, like many others, I found myself overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information and conflicting advice. It was like being lost in a vast digital jungle, surrounded by unfamiliar sounds and voices. I remember struggling to understand the "funnels," "lead magnets," and "automated online business" jargon. It all felt so foreign.

Ryan Sletcher, a fellow South African, became my first mentor. He introduced me to Jeff Walker's "Launch" book and the Product Launch Formula. Ryan's guidance was invaluable. It was like finding a compass in the digital jungle. His coaching gave me a solid foundation in online business. It was in this time that the fire was ignited in me to help others navigate this exciting world.
Since then, I've had the privilege of learning from incredible mentors like Mike Filsaime, Aaron Fletcher, Paul Murphy, and Derral Eves and others. Each one has contributed to my understanding and growth. Their guidance has shaped my understanding of online marketing and helped me develop my unique approach. It's been a journey of continuous learning and growth, and I'm grateful for each mentor who has illuminated the path.
Funny story about how I discovered Aaron Fletcher… It was when I was looking for a name for my online business. I wanted to call it "Online Launch Map" as I wanted to help people map out the complex process of launching their first online course. Ironically, I found Aaron Fletcher through a Google search for "Online Launch Map" – wanting to make sure the name hadn’t already been taken. That's when I stumbled upon his software, "Launch Maps," and I was immediately intrigued. His work, like mine, emphasizes clarity and strategic planning, and helping to combat information overwhelm. I’ve since been an enthusiastic student of his and a certified Growthworks Marketing Consultant.
